Week 6: Specialists Corner

August 6, 2025

At Rolling River, every day is an opportunity to discover something new, and our specialist areas are where imagination and exploration shine the brightest. This week, the Specialty Spotlight was on Snowflakes, Slime & Snow Globes! ❄️

Even though it’s heating up outside, we’ve been cooling things down in our specialties this week with some seriously frosty fun! From snowflake science to icy experiments, our campers have been busy learning, building, and creating in every corner of camp.

STEAM
In STEAM, we dove deep into the science of snowflakes! Campers explored how snowflakes form in nature, why they always have six sides, and whether it’s true that no two are exactly alike. Then it was time to engineer our own! Using toothpicks and playdough, campers carefully constructed symmetrical snowflakes—starting with a hexagon, of course!

Intensives & Hobbies
Ice, ice baby! Our hobby campers became scientists and engineers as they tackled ice-themed challenges. Can you fill two glasses so the water levels match when the ice melts? Can you go ice fishing with just a string and salt? (Spoiler: You can!) We even built igloos that stuck together and discovered how they stay warm inside. It’s been ice cold fun on some pretty hot days!

Hidden Treasures
After learning all about how igloos are built, our campers took on the challenge of constructing their own. With teamwork and determination, they built snowy structures out of cups—starting in a circle and working their way up, just like real igloo builders. Campers loved teaming up to build bigger and better creations!

Nature
This week in Nature, campers are stepping into a winter wonderland! We’re learning fascinating facts about snow and cold-weather climates. Then, with our homemade “snow,” we built mini snowmen and had some chilly fun in the sun.

Lower Arts & Crafts
Our youngest campers have been getting crafty après-ski style! They created adorable abominable snowmen, sparkly snowflakes with popsicle sticks and gems, and peaceful winter scenes with snow-covered forests. Next up? A very special project — Memory Bracelets! Using Sculpey clay, each camper will design beads that reflect their interests and favorite camp memories.

Arts & Crafts Hobbies
We’re turning up the creativity with two amazing projects this week. First up: homemade snow globes! Using clear cups, paper snow, and straws, campers built swirling winter scenes. Then, they explored color and light by painting stained glass-inspired designs.

Slime Time!
What’s winter without a little cloud slime? Campers whipped up the fluffiest creations using glue, activator, shaving cream, and their favorite colors.

From snowy science to sparkling crafts, our campers are proving that winter magic can happen even in the middle of summer. Stay tuned for more specialty adventures next week! ⛄
